Carson Kosobud’s career at Arizona State was brief. The defenseman played in just 10 games in his first season with the Sun Devils prior to transferring to the University of Alaska-Anchorage.
Kosobud was a desert native, having spent 10 years of his life living in Arizona before moving to Minnesota in the 8th grade. He ended up winning a 2A State Championship for Moorhead during his high school hockey career.
The defender has since become a regular for the Seawolves, playing in 27 games in 2022-2023.
His decision to transfer forced him to sit out the 2021-2022 season, and he never wore this white set jersey that was prepared for him.
Kosobud’s jersey marks the first time one of the “third generation” jerseys from Arizona State have reached the hobby. Arizona State has not sold any hockey jerseys to fans for several years, however they reversed course and began selling some jerseys during the final games of the 2022-2023 season at Mullett Arena.
This jersey was among the variety of game worn and game issued jerseys sold in the arena. The vast majority of jerseys were from the second generation of ASU designs. There were also a couple of jerseys from the first generation.
The Arizona State Sun Devils hockey program debuted new home and away jerseys prior to 2021-2022. They were a solid maroon and a solid white. Both jerseys featured just a bit of piping up the sleeves and across the collarbones and shoulder blades.
The white jersey was designated as the home sweater and the maroon was for away games. They are Primegreen jerseys, just like the ones worn in the NHL beginning in 2021-2022. They do not have the tag on the lower hem, however.
Kosobud’s jersey features solid maroon single-layer twill numbers and the sleeve numbers appear to be larger than is typical for ASU jerseys.
The jerseys have “BE THE TRADITION” in the back of the neck and this particular jersey shows signs of some bleeding around the program’s motto emblazoned there.
This jersey features the familiar state outlined pitchfork on the back of the neck. Combined with the pitchfork crest on the front, those are the only two hints of a different color from the solid white and maroon motif.
There was a little surprise inside the back hem of Kosobud’s jersey.
The Sun Devils hockey program has begun applying tagging to their game worn jerseys starting in 2021-2022. They feature the phrase “Arizona State Authentic Game Jersey”, as well as former equipment manager Jon Laughner’s name. Below that is the info that the jersey is customized by Exclusive Pro Sports.
It’s a neat touch by the program and begs the question of whether the team will eventually include set information or seasons on the tagging.
