Josh Doan, the son of Arizona Coyotes legend Shane Doan, wore this “blackout” specialty sweater for the Chicago Steel during their 2020-2021 Clark Cup championship season.
Josh had a breakout campaign in the USHL, finishing third in the league in scoring with 31 goals and 39 assists in just 53 games. His teammates occupied the top four spots, in fact.
Doan’s growth from 2019-2020 to 2020-2021 was immense, and scouts have taken notice.
After being passed over in his age 18 year at the NHL Draft, Corey Pronman projects Doan as the 120th best prospect in the draft which should slot him somewhere in the middle rounds…and hopefully an Arizona Coyotes sweater.
Pronman described Josh Doan as a player who “works hard, he’ll go to the net, he can win battles along the boards and is solid defensively.” He does have one drawback, according to Pronman, which is “a lack of NHL-caliber footspeed.”
Doan is an obvious Arizona hockey product, having spent his entire youth hockey career as part of the Jr. Coyotes organization in the Phoenix suburb of Scottsdale. I was pretty thrilled to be able to snag one of his jerseys.
The Chicago Steel wore these “blackout” specialty jerseys on February 13th, 2021 in an overtime win against the Dubuque Fighting Saints.
Doan’s jersey has pretty light wear as expected. There are some nice board burns and marks on the right sleeve and another on the left collarbone. Josh signed the jersey on the number on the back.
Everything on these gamers is sublimated including the name, numbers, crest, and 20th anniversary patch.
Josh Doan had the good fortune of being the son of the most beloved hockey figure in Arizona.
While having Shane Doan as a father might have provided some benefit, his work on the ice leaves no question that belongs in an NHL organization.
While he awaits the 2021 NHL Draft, Doaner Jr. will be plying his trade for Arizona State University in what could potentially be a very loaded young squad. ASU has already far exceeded expectations in it’s first few years as a Division I hockey program, and the incoming class of recruits is nothing to sneeze at.
It remains to be seen if Josh Doan will make it the NHL. In the interim, it seems clear he will be another in a growing list of Arizona hockey products to be drafted and given a shot to fulfill his dreams.
