Wade Murphy sits alongside Joey Daccord as the first NHL drafted players to play for the Arizona State Sun Devils after he transferred to ASU from North Dakota.
Prior to the school’s inaugural season in D1 hockey, the winger made the decision to transfer to ASU and sit out the 2015-2016 season. He was allowed to suit up for the 2016-2017 season and that was the only season he played for the maroon and gold.
Both Daccord and Murphy made their first appearances for the Sun Devils in the same game on October 7th, 2016 in a 9-2 loss against Notre Dame.
Wade played in 31 games in 2016-2017, scoring 9 goals and 11 assists. His 20 points were tied for second on the team.
Arizona State had just two styles of jersey in it’s first three seasons of Division I hockey. These were a white home and a black road jersey. Those sweaters did occasionally get worn in reverse (black at home, white on the road) during that time frame.
One notable difference with these Black Set gamers versus the black jerseys from the inaugural season is that the colors used in the numbers were inverted for year two. The first-year gamers had maroon numbers with yellow borders, however the second-year sweaters were switched to yellow numbers with maroon borders.
Wade Murphy’s black gamer has tremendous wear for a Sun Devils gamer. Perhaps the most I’ve seen in terms of wear on a non-goalie jersey from ASU.
The left sleeve has several large unrepaired holes and the right sleeve has one very large unrepaired hole. Both sleeves feature board burns and stick burns in the wrist and elbow area and near the sleeve numbers. There are loose threads in the sleeve numbers and wear on the pitchforks in the twill. The right ASU shoulder patch also has a board burn on the bottom of the “A”.
Murphy’s jersey doesn’t have much visible wear in the front due to the dark color. The back is mostly clean as well beyond game and wash wear on the pitchfork twill numbers.
