Kyle Capobianco wore this gorgeous “El Lazo de Tucson” sweater in two games in the abbreviated 2020-2021 AHL season.
The jerseys were created to honor the culture and history of Southern Arizona.
They feature the skull of a roadrunner as the main part of the crest, doubling as a reference to Dia de Los Muertos.
“El Lazo” itself is Spanish for lariat or lasso, and was inspired by the City of Tucson’s seal that features a lariat tying together the modern city and it’s historic area. The hat references the Tucson Rodeo and Parade which is held every February and celebrates the ranching history of the area.
Capo’s jersey is relatively clean.
He wore it in two of the three games the team wore the “El Lazo” set (4/2/21 and 5/14/21) and did not register a point.
The right breast has a nice slash mark that is very visible in person, though it is a bit faint in pictures due to the black fabric. There is another good sized mark near the right sleeve numbers that is also faint in photos.
There are also some noticeable loose threads on the crest, the left sleeve numbers, the left shoulder patch, and the nameplate. The sleeve number and patch threads helped lead to one photomatch.
It is signed by Capobianco on the back as these were auctioned and delivered by the players to the fans postgame on May 14th.
Everything on these jerseys is sewn down. The lettering was done in maroon and white and really pops on the solid black of the body. Utilizing the lasso itself as piping around the waist, sleeves, and collar is another nice detail adding some spice to the deep maroon and black of the sweater.
The sleeve features the traditional Arizona state outline shoulder patch and a simplified version of the El Lazo. The simplified El Lazo patch looks amazing. I would have liked to see the Tucson shoulder patch from the Kachina jersey instead of the generic AZ state logo, however.
While the Roadrunners Kachinas are an obvious number one, these are easily one of the nicest specialty shirts I’ve seen produced at any level of hockey.
They looked absolutely amazing on the ice, and I was thrilled to be able to snag one to complete my set.
