Demetrios Koumontzis spent five seasons playing for the Arizona State Sun Devils hockey program.
The Pittsburgh native was discovered by Greg Powers and his staff while he was playing for the local Jr. Coyotes 16U AAA program. Powers secured Komo’s commitment as a 16-year-old and the rest is history.
Koumontzis’ unique path makes him one of the few desert hockey products to also play for ASU, which in turn makes his jerseys perfect for my unique collection.
Komo played in 142 games for the Sun Devils, scoring 22 goals and 45 assists for 67 points. His 142 games ranks him second all-time in program history in games played behind Jacob Wilson. He typically played wing during his college career, but also filled in on defense at times including late in the 2022-2023 season when the Arizona State roster was decimated by injuries.
In 2022-2023, Demetrios played in 37 games, scoring career highs in goals (7), assists (11), and points (18) in his graduate season.
Arizona State introduced these Barry Bonds inspired jerseys prior to the inaugural homestand at Mullett Arena.
The jerseys emulated the design of the Sun Devils’ baseball uniforms down to the Devils script and coloring around the sleeves and waist. From the moment the announcement video dropped these jerseys were a hit with ASU fans and alumni, as well as the greater hockey community.
ASU is known for it’s incredible sweaters, but the Bonds jerseys might be the best they’ve produced outside of the 1975 Sunburst throwbacks.
The Sun Devils wore the baseball sweaters in five games in the 2022-2023 season. Those five games were split into two sets.
The first set was worn with a gorgeous inaugural season at Mullett Arena patch on October 14th and October 15th against Colgate. The second set was worn in the Desert Hockey Classic on January 6th against Michigan Tech and January 7th against Air Force. They were also worn on February 24th against Alaska Fairbanks.
Demetrios Koumontzis’ jersey is from the second set worn without the inaugural season patch.
He wore it in all three games and tallied no points in the sweater. Komo also swapped to defense in the game against Alaska Fairbanks in this jersey.
It has great wear for just three games with multiple repairs, stick marks, and burns.
The right sleeve has two repairs, one unrepaired hole, and some stick/puck marks. On the left sleeve is more stick marks, a burn, and some paint transfer. The front of the sweater is clean and features the alternate captain’s “A”. There is also no visible wear on the back.
These sweaters have set tags inside them denoting them as Arizona State Authentic Game Jerseys and have head equipment manager Corby Antropik’s name on the tag alongside customizer Exclusive Pro Sports.
